You wrote: "For universities and colleges, now is the time to examine operating models and assumptions, before the full impact of the recession hits."

This morning I presented a paper at a conference on higher education that suggested (gasp!) that the current model for developing online higher education content is both terribly inefficient and ensures that the quality of the content will never be particularly strong.
The truly scary thing is this: large organizations, like colleges and universities, don't typically change a great deal. History shows that they only change once beaten by newcomers who introduce new, better operating models. We need new models now.

Yes. How do you bring everyone together though - we do it in learning through various networks and initiatives but don't know with this - who would be interested, how to connect them up ? It would be great to start an economic education initiative - but who to involve - as well as individuals - would it be organizations like World Economic Forum as well as the alternative World Social Forum - just some thoughts.

Thanks, Nicola. Getting a common conversation going on the need for structural change is a good first step and even though many have identified the problems, few have come up with concrete solutions. There is definitely a need for better "fundamental economic understanding" and not the bafflegab from the pundits on mainstream media.

Yes - this is great insight (and your previous natural entrepreneur post too). It seems too easy for governments and other agencies "to be seen to making positive action" in order to encourage consumer confidence, but I don't agree with some of the actions being proposed, discussed through the media and implemented quickly. It would be great to link up all the posts which are looking for alternative models.

I saw a post from Nathan at Economic Edge

"How about we START with the bloggers who have been shown to truly understand what’s occurring so they can get the word out and build upon a base of solid mathematical and fundamental economic understanding?

It’s TIME to begin those discussions now and to get organized. If we don’t, when we reach the bottom of the ‘C’ there will be central bankers standing there with a stack of documents saying “sign here.” I would love to show them the door in advance by having the people preempt their efforts with an effort of our own.

Getting started on a “one world” that actually works requires that we first get our own act together. I don’t care how this is accomplished or by whom, as long as it is accomplished for the people. "
